Karl Knapton has recently joined phs Group as Sales Manager, Healthcare & Waste. Here he discusses the importance of compliant healthcare waste management and how phs can help businesses became more sustainable.
I am thrilled to be joining phs Group as the new Healthcare Sales Manager, stepping into a company that truly puts people at the heart of its products and services. From my first interactions, it was clear that phs is more than just a service provider—it is a business committed to making a real impact on customers, communities, and the environment.
How can phs support businesses with sustainable waste disposal?
phs has a strong commitment to ESG, particularly in waste management. Sustainability is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. phs is leading the way with the phs LifeCycle Strategy, which diverts up to 95% of collected hygiene waste from landfill, converting it into sustainable energy that powers homes, hospitals, and schools.
Additionally, phs has made significant strides in upgrading its fleet to cleaner, more environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric models that meet Euro VI emissions standards. With an ambitious goal to achieve Net-Zero emissions by 2040, phs is truly making a difference.
The journey ahead is exciting as I look forward to supporting our healthcare customers with meeting their sustainability targets, and working with my colleagues to create safer, cleaner, and more efficient environments.

What healthcare services do phs provide across the UK?
- An extensive range of storage and disposal options for all types of healthcare waste
phs offer a wide range of storage and disposal solutions for all types of health care related waste. We can provide your business with healthcare waste bins and bags with a managed disposal service. As well as providing you with a clean and effective waste collection and disposal service completed by fully compliant healthcare waste technicians. - Supporting your business with more sustainable waste disposal for offensive waste
In April 2025, the standard rate of Landfill Tax increased by 21.6% per tonne. By working with phs, your businesses can avoid this tax increase and opt for more sustainable offensive waste disposal. This is because, as part of the phs LifeCycle Strategy, instead of landfill, the waste we collect from our customers is sent to Energy from Waste facilities, where it is turned into a source of renewable energy for the national grid. - A supportive and transparent pre-acceptance process to ensure you’re compliant
phs and producers of healthcare waste have a legal duty to collect certain information before waste can be collected and disposed of. This is called a Pre-Acceptance Audit. phs can support your business with a straightforward and compliant pre-acceptance process that will allow your business to meet to remain compliant with waste disposal regulation.
